The Build

The BASIC Stack: Build Your AI-Native Baseline

You won't rise to the level of your AI ambitions — you'll fall to the level of your AI systems. The BASIC Stack is the system: five layers, assembled in order, each answering one diagnostic question.

Definition

The BASIC Stack is a five-layer framework for building an AI-native baseline, assembled in order: Brain (one readable source of truth), Assistants (two models chosen deliberately), Skills (reusable playbooks and skill chains), Interface (AI where the team already works), and Controls (training, policy, and data safety). None of it requires a data science team — it requires a decision to treat AI as an operating system.

B — Brain: make your company readable to agents

One curated source of truth an agent can actually read: capture, curate, store. If an agent can't see your company, nothing above this layer works. This is where most 'AI hallucinates' complaints actually begin.

A — Assistants: the two-model doctrine

Run two models on purpose, not five by accident. Model one is the assistant bundled with your office suite (Gemini or Copilot) for in-flow work; model two is one frontier stack (Claude/Cowork or ChatGPT Work) for serious agentic work. Standardize and go deep instead of spreading thin.

S — Skills: reusable playbooks and skill chains

Encode your standards as skills, then chain them — a 'macro' skill that fires several skills in sequence (draft → refine → quality-check), each improving the output before the next takes over. This is where quality jumps and the hallucination objection largely dissolves.

I — Interface: AI where the team already works

Put agents where the work happens — Slack, Teams, your docs — not in a separate tab people have to remember to visit. Adoption is an interface problem as much as a capability one.

C — Controls: training, policy, and data safety

Training so everyone improves, an acceptable-use policy that says what's allowed, and a never-share list that keeps sensitive data out of the wrong tools. Controls are what make the other four layers safe to run at speed.

“None of it requires a data science team. It requires a decision to treat AI as an operating system.”

Questions & Answers

The BASIC Stack: FAQ

What is the BASIC Stack?

The BASIC Stack is a five-layer framework for building an AI-native baseline, assembled in order: Brain (a readable source of truth), Assistants (two deliberately chosen models), Skills (reusable playbooks and skill chains), Interface (AI where the team already works), and Controls (training, policy, data safety).

Do I need a data science team to become AI-native?

No. The BASIC Stack is explicitly buildable at small-business and even personal scale. It requires a decision to treat AI as an operating system, not a specialist headcount — commodity capability is rented, and the work is in wiring it to your own context.

What is a skill chain in AI?

A skill chain is a 'macro' skill that fires several single-purpose skills in sequence — for example draft → refine the copy → quality-check — each improving the output before the next takes over. It's where quality jumps and where the 'AI hallucinates' objection largely dissolves, because the workflow checks its own first draft.

How many AI models should a business use?

Two, on purpose. The two-model doctrine pairs the assistant bundled with your office suite (Gemini or Copilot) for in-flow work with one frontier stack (Claude or ChatGPT) for serious agentic work. Standardizing on two beats spreading thin across five you chose by accident.
